Mr. Sean Gamino is the Information Systems Manager at PPT Solutions Incorporated. Mr. Gamino attended The University of Alabama in Huntsville to study Management Information Systems (MIS). He received a Bachelor’s Degree and went on to attain a Master’s Degree in MIS as well. He has been working in this field for over 20 years, and he enjoys the work that he does. When asked about the education or training needed for his position, Mr. Gamino stated that he learned most from co-ops and internships.
Mr. Gamino kept mentioning that ideas he learned outside of the classroom prepared him thoroughly for the workplace dynamics involved with his career choice. Mr. Gamino commented that no special training is necessary, but knowing how to work with different personalities is a key aspect of the job. A Bachelor’s Degree in MIS or a related field would be expected in order to be a manager in software development, and a Master’s Degree is preferable, especially when holding a position as a team leader.
Psychology plays an important role in the workplace. When put in a leadership position, knowing how to manage a diverse set of personalities will be helpful. An interview was conducted to find how psychology pertains to the process of software development. The results of the interview and reading of the textbook, Visualizing Psychology, were gathered and displayed for students who plan to enter the Computer Science field. This information is meant to inform such students of how psychology influences daily operations of a software development team leader.
Mr. Gamino oversees the planning and architecture of software system production at PPT Solutions. He is in charge of leading a team of people to complete the task of creating software for clients. Mr. Gamino’s day to day operations vary, however, he encounters many face toface communications with clients, as well as communication through email and over the phone. He noted that communication with clients is key in his position because it is part of his job to completely understand the software requirements for all projects.
An interesting thing that he said during the interview was, “I need to hear the client’s wants and interpret them into their actual needs”. He revealed that being able to discern these things is imperative to being an effective leader and ultimately to being successful in his position. Mr. Gamino’s job success is dependent upon his ability to gather information through human interactions and understanding different human behaviors. Therefore, the abundance of human interaction related to the position encourages the idea that psychology applies to the job.
Mr. Gamino repeatedly mentioned the importance of psychology and the effects it has on his position. He named various aspects where psychology played a role in his career such as the following: interpreting feedback from face to face to interactions, introducing appropriate terminology to bring about a cultural change, and understanding the personalities of team members to enhance team chemistry.
Knowing the clients’ needs is imperative to providing successful software. In some cases, there is a resistance to change how things are done and how things are said. Mr. Gamino stated that when he comes across companies using incorrect terminology on various aspects of software, he simply uses the correct terminology in conversation as many times as possible.
Mr. Gamino stated that this was a cultural change that needed to take place. He said that it does not take long for the vocabulary to change once he starts this process. By doing this, he is planting the correct terminology into their mind through repetition. Mr. Gamino also spoke on the importance of knowing how to guide each person on the team. Being a manager, he must be able to do this effectively, for it is a major part of his job to be able to lead others to collectively get a job done. Knowing team members’ personalities allows him to be a better leader, and knowing their behaviors aids Mr. Gamino to make the best decisions for the team moving forward.
The information gained from this interview relates to my major in almost every aspect. Computer Science is similar to Management Information Systems. MIS is the business and management side of programming, developing, and analyzing computer software, while Computer Science deals primarily with programming and understanding the logic of computers. I plan to one day be in a position very similar to Mr. Gamino’s, where there is a fine balance between working with technology as well as interacting with clients and team members. Understanding how psychology relates to the job may give assistance to reaching this goal.
The meeting with Mr. Gamino can be related to chapter one from the textbook, Visualizing Psychology. There were numerous topics relating to psychology that Mr. Gamino touched on such as behaviors, mental processes, and human interactions. When Mr. Gamino mentioned how important it is to understand how different personalities work together, the table from the textbook labeled “Modern psychology’s seven major perspectives” came to mind (Carpenter 9).
The sociocultural perspective of psychology deals with social intercommunication, and culture’s effect on behavior as well as ways of thinking (Carpenter 8). A cultural change, such as what was stated earlier, would also fall under the description of the sociocultural perspective of psychology (Carpenter 9). Therefore, being knowledgeable of human interactions and mindsets are two major concepts that can be related to Mr. Gamino’s job and psychology.
Before this interview was conducted, I had never thought of the many ways that psychology applies to such a technology related job. I learned that although much of the job pertains to technology, an equal amount, or more, is reliant on ideas from psychology. Conducting this research has been an eye opener. I learned about the many ways psychology can be used when working in a technical environment and developing software. Many aspects such as human behaviors, thought processes, and cultural influences are taken into account during this process, and this is made evident after speaking with Mr. Gamino. I have a new outlook on this career path, and I am looking forward to the many opportunities to use and understand psychology in my career.
